THE TERRITORY

Terrasini

Terrasini was originally a small fishing village. The true meaning of its name is not definitely clear: it may derive from terra sinus (land of the gulf) or, according to other interpretations, from terra sinorum, that is “land of the inlets”.

Terrasini was originally a small fishing village. The true meaning of its name is not definitely clear: it may derive from terra sinus (land of the gulf) or, according to other interpretations, from terra sinorum, that is “land of the inlets”.

Its jagged and sinuous coast extends from the Lido della Ciucca to the beach of San Cataldo.

Today, the main activities of the local population are fishing and tourism.

As far as the surrounding countryside is concerned, it is characterized by the presence of the dwarf palm, still widespread in this area and typical of Sicily.

Also remarkable is the presence of the Reserve of Capo Rama,  which was founded near Terrasini in 2000 and is managed today by WWF.

In this preservation area it is possible to admire many different animal and vegetable species.

Terrasini has deep roots in local history and culture, which are still living in the atmosphere of its traditional celebrations as the Festa di li Schietti or the Festa di San Pietro (Feast of Saint Peter).

Tourists visiting Terrasini should not miss some important buildings, among them the Palazzo D’Aumale.
